ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- In a surprising turn of events this offseason, junior wide receiver Channing Goodwin has been named the third option in Michigan football's receiving corps, just behind starters Andrew Marsh and JJ Buchanan. This decision by head coach Kyle Whittingham comes after a competitive battle for the position, where freshman Salesi Moa and Texas transfer Jaime Ffrench were initially considered frontrunners.
Goodwin's journey to this point has not been without challenges. He began last season as a starter opposite Semaj Morgan but struggled with dropped passes in the early games, leading to his replacement by freshman Andrew Marsh. However, with a new coaching staff and a strong performance during fall camp, Goodwin has regained his footing and emerged as a reliable option for the Wolverines.
Jason Beck, Michigan's offensive coordinator, praised Goodwin's return to form after missing spring practices due to surgery. "Channing, we didn’t have him in the spring because he was out coming back from his surgery. So it was really great getting him back in this fall camp. And he’s just really steady, knows what to do, very football intelligent, really dependable and consistent," Beck noted.
While Goodwin is set to play a significant role, he will not be the only receiver utilized in the game plan. The trio of Moa, Ffrench, and freshman Travis Johnson, along with Kendrick Bell and possibly Jamar Browder or Jacob Washington, are also expected to see action. Beck clarified that although Goodwin is ranked as the third receiver, the starting lineup may vary based on the team's personnel groupings.
Beck explained, "If we were to rank the receivers, Channing would be the third guy. But the way we do it is certain guys start in certain personnel groups. And so a lot of those guys will play. We’ll have five other receivers playing besides Andrew and JJ. And it’s just going to depend on the personnel group and who’s in there." This strategy indicates a flexible approach to the offense, allowing for multiple players to contribute throughout the game.
The Michigan Wolverines will showcase their revamped receiving corps for the first time this Saturday when they host Western Michigan at The Big House for their season opener. Fans are eager to see how Goodwin and the rest of the receiving group perform in their quest for a successful season.
