In a busy day of roster adjustments that included trading cornerback Avery Smith to the Seahawks, the Chargers officially subtracted another key presence from their secondary by releasing safety Tony Jefferson, accoring to ESPN's Adam Schefter.
Jefferson’s journey with the Chargers has been one of the league's most compelling storylines over the last few seasons. After initially retiring to serve as a scouting intern for the Ravens in 2023, the itch to play brought him back to the gridiron in 2024. He quickly became a beloved fixture in the locker room, dubbed "Unc" by his teammates.
Jefferson is coming off a highly productive 2025 campaign with the Bolts, appearing in 13 games and recording 57 tackles and a career-high four interceptions. According to Pro Football Focus, he allowed a passer rating of just 36.7 in coverage last year, ranking third among all NFL safeties.
Because of that, the Chargers signed Jefferson to a one-year, $2 million contract in March to lock him in for the upcoming season. He was expected to provide critical veteran reliability behind starters Derwin James Jr. and Elijah Molden under first-year defensive coordinator Chris O’Leary.
Because Jefferson is a veteran, he is not subject to the NFL's waiver system and immediately hits the open market as a free agent. It remains possible that the front office plans to bring Jefferson back on a modified deal or to the practice squad once initial injured reserve designations or corresponding roster transactions settle.
