The Kansas City Chiefs finished their uninspiring preseason with a 9-9 tie against the Seattle Seahawks, as Seattle kicker Jason Myers missed a 52-yard field goal that would have won the game as time expired.
The tie meant the Chiefs went winless during the preseason with an 0-2-1, which wasn’t surprsing given that they scored just a single touchdown in three games.
Both teams sat their starting quarterbacks, as per usual in the third preseason game, with Seattle keeping Sam Darnold on the sidelines and the Chiefs playing without Patrick Mahomes as he continues to shoot for Week 1 while rehabiliting his knee after offseason surgery.
Just two quarterbacks played in this one, with Garrett Nussmeier going 22-for-34 for 198 yards for Kansas City and Jalen Milroe going 16-for-26 for Seattle.
The first half was a battle of field goals with the Chiefs getting a pair of Harrison Butker chip shots from less than 30 yards, while Myers had one from 46 yards out to make it 6-3 at halftime.
Seattle scored the lone touchdown of the game in the third quarter on a four-yard pass from Milroe to Nick Vanett, but Myers missed the extra point to make it 9-6. Kansas City then tied the game at 9-9 on another short field goal from Butker to make it 9-9, and Seattle’s final drive stalled to force the missed field goal that left it a tie.
Chiefs linebacker R Mason Thomas had a strip sack and a fumble recover, and he probably expressed the thoughts about the possibility of bonus preseason football.
“I thought we were going to overtime,” he said in an ESPN/AP report, “but it was nice to get a tie.”
Thomas was more excited about the Chiefs opener against the Denver Broncos at Arrowhead on Sept. 14, as it will be the first game of the season featured on Monday Night Football.
“It's going to be packed out, at night in the loudest stadium in the in the whole NFL,” Thomas added. “I’m excited.”
The Chiefs did get several noteworthy performance despite their overall sluggish offense. Andrew Armstrong caught five passes for 52 yards in his bid to make roster, and rookie running back had a nice game with 39 yards on seven carries for a 5.6 yards per carry average.
Brashard Smith had 72 yards on 16 carries as running back Kenneth Walker III sat out this one after sustaining a foot injury in practice during the week.
