After a few seasons, Eric Bieniemy is back with the Kansas City Chiefs, reuniting with the AFC West franchise to be the team’s offensive coordinator — a role he held before for them.
The 57-year-old Bieniemy has some new faces to guide on offense, considering that this is just his first season returning to Kansas City, and among the most interesting players he’ll have to develop chemistry with is wide receiver Rashee Rice.
On Tuesday, Bieniemy got candid about what he’s learned so far mentoring Rice.
“First and foremost, he’s tough. He’s very, very tough,” Bieniemy said, via Nick Sloan of KMBC News. “Another thing, and I’m not saying this in a bad way, he’s hardheaded. You know what I mean? And he’s stubborn because he feels that he’s good enough at certain things.”
I like that because you got to get him to see it from a different point of view, and when he can see it from a different point of view with a set of different eyes, now it opens up his brain,” he said. “I mean, you can see it resonate, and so those are the things that I’ve learned about him.”

“I believe there is another level, and of course, he would tell you there’s there’s plenty of levels for him to get to,” Bieniemy added.
“But I think right now we’re just taking this deal one day at a time. Long as we’re working and focusing on, I always challenge them. Make sure you’re focusing on three things per day to improve upon.”
A former SMU Mustangs star, Rice was taken in the second round (55th overall) by Kansas City in the 2023 NFL Draft. Many expected him to be a major contributor to the team’s offense, but injuries and off-the-field issues slowed him down in the past two seasons, during which he played in only 12 games.
