A significant transformation is on the horizon for high school athletics in San Joaquin County, California, as the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section has unveiled its 2028-32 realignment proposal. This plan, announced on September 3, 2026, would lead to the dissolution of two historic leagues: the San Joaquin Athletic Association (SJAA) and the Trans Valley League (TVL).
The SJAA, established in 1972, has been a cornerstone of local high school sports, featuring schools such as Chavez, Stagg, McNair, Weston Ranch, Bear Creek, and Franklin. Under the new proposal, these institutions would transition to the Tri-City Athletic League (TCAL), which currently includes teams like St. Mary’s, Lincoln, Kimball, Lodi, and Tracy. Notably, Edison High School already participates in the TCAL for football, while Merrill West competes only in that sport.
In addition to the SJAA's dissolution, the Trans Valley League, which has roots dating back to 1959, would also cease to exist. This league currently comprises Escalon, Ripon, and Ripon Christian. As part of the proposed changes, Escalon and Ripon would move to the Valley Oak League, while Ripon Christian is set to join the Central California Conference.
The proposed realignment introduces a two-tier system within the TCAL, categorized as Capital and Valley. The Capital tier will serve as the more competitive division, aiming to ensure that schools are placed in leagues that reflect their athletic capabilities. Assistant commissioner Jeff Lorenson emphasized that this new structure is designed to maintain unified governance while promoting competitive equity among member schools.
To determine the new alignments, the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section utilized a multifaceted approach, focusing on competitive equity, the scope of athletic programs, and school enrollment figures. The analysis included reviewing each school's performance over the past two years in league standings and playoff results, as well as considering future enrollment projections. The executive committee plans to meet again on January 21, with the final realignment expected to be completed by February 2, 2027. Schools will have the opportunity to vote on the proposed changes starting February 8, with a simple majority required for the plan to move forward. If approved, the final proposal will be presented to the board of managers for ratification on April 21, 2027.
