As the 2026 NFL season approaches, Houston Texans quarterback CJ Stroud finds himself in a pivotal moment of his career. Following a series of turnovers during the previous postseason, questions have arisen regarding whether Stroud should be the highest-paid quarterback in the league. Despite being under contract through 2027, the Texans have the option to evaluate his performance further, particularly with the fifth-year option in play.
Stroud has been identified by ESPN's Bill Barnwell as one of the players facing significant pressure as the new season unfolds. While Barnwell does not doubt Stroud's immediate future with the Texans, he emphasizes that the 2026 season will be crucial in determining the quarterback's contract expectations. According to Barnwell, the difference between Stroud returning to his impressive rookie form and remaining a solid yet unremarkable starter could equate to a staggering $100 million in guaranteed money.
"If the postseason issues linger into the 2027 season and the Texans disappoint, would the Texans be willing to consider what life looks like without Stroud on what could be a franchise-limiting second contract? The difference between those two scenarios might be $100 million or more in guaranteed money," Barnwell noted in his analysis.
Stroud's rookie season in 2023 was nothing short of remarkable. He threw for 4,108 yards, completed 23 touchdown passes, and recorded only five interceptions, earning him the title of Offensive Rookie of the Year. However, while he maintained productivity in the following two seasons—3,727 passing yards with 20 touchdowns in 2024 and 3,041 passing yards with 19 touchdowns in 2025—he has yet to replicate the same ceiling he achieved as a rookie. The turnovers during the last postseason have raised doubts about his potential as a quarterback capable of leading a team to a Super Bowl victory.
Compounding Stroud's challenges is the Texans' lack of significant improvements to bolster his support. Veteran offensive tackle Braden Smith is currently on injured reserve due to a plantar fascia injury, which could sideline him for several weeks. Additionally, wide receiver Jayden Higgins has suffered a torn ACL, leaving Stroud to forge connections with new teammates like Kayshon Boutte. The Texans have also brought in former Detroit Lions running back David Montgomery, who will be part of a revamped offensive scheme.
Conversely, a breakout season for Stroud could elevate him to the status of franchise cornerstone and potentially make him the highest-paid player in NFL history. The Texans are under pressure to secure a contract extension for Stroud sooner rather than later. Analyst Jason McIntyre suggests that delaying the deal could backfire, as other quarterbacks eligible for extensions next summer could drive up Stroud's market value.
“If I’m the Texans, I want to wrap this deal up right now, because you know what happens next summer? Forget about CJ’s price going up,” McIntyre stated. “Caleb Williams is gonna get big-time money. Jayden Daniels in Washington is also a name to watch.”
Reports indicate that the Texans are already prepared to place Stroud in the $50 million per year salary range. However, Stroud appears willing to wait until next year to leverage his position further.
