In a thrilling start to the Class AA football season, Colonie High School emerged victorious against Albany, clinching a 14-6 win on Friday night. The Wolf Pack's head coach, Jon LaPoint, had anticipated a challenging matchup against the Falcons, and his expectations were met with a fiercely contested game.
Despite being outgained in total yardage, with Albany racking up 325 yards compared to Colonie's 163, the Wolf Pack's defense proved to be the difference-maker. The Colonie defensive unit, which featured only one returning starter from the previous season, faced an early challenge when Albany's Amir I Nasir scored on a 27-yard touchdown run during the opening drive. However, the Colonie defense quickly regrouped and demonstrated resilience throughout the game.
LaPoint emphasized the importance of capitalizing on mistakes, a strategy that paid off as Colonie managed to force seven turnovers. "We knew that Albany was going to be a tough matchup for us. We capitalized on mistakes, which is something we preached all week. They stepped up in a huge way. We had that bend don’t break mentality," he explained after the game.
One of the pivotal moments occurred late in the second quarter when Colonie trailed 6-0. Albany was threatening to score inside the five-yard line when Keegan Nieckarz made a crucial play. He chased down Albany quarterback Jah'Quinn Thompson, forcing a fumble that was recovered by teammate Kaiden Hill at the 2-yard line. Hill would later score on a remarkable 98-yard fumble return, showcasing his speed and agility, which shifted the momentum in favor of Colonie.
Colonie took an 8-6 lead into halftime after quarterback Steven Thomas successfully ran for a two-point conversion following Hill's touchdown. The Wolf Pack continued to build on their lead in the second half. Thomas, who was making his first appearance as a quarterback in a varsity game, connected with Cameron Frazier for a 22-yard touchdown pass, extending the lead to 14-6 after a 60-yard drive.
Defensively, Colonie was relentless, forcing turnovers on all three of Albany's drives that entered the red zone. Junior Jaxson Woodward was instrumental, recovering two fumbles deep in Colonie territory. Thomas also contributed defensively, forcing a fumble and securing an interception in the second half, demonstrating his versatility and commitment to the team's success.
Gavin Uzzo added to the defensive effort with an interception, while Frazier not only recovered a fumble but also intercepted a pass, further showcasing the depth and talent of the Colonie defense. The Wolf Pack's ability to force seven turnovers, including four fumbles and three interceptions, was key to their victory.
Looking ahead, Albany will continue their season-opening road trip with a game against Schenectady next Friday night, while Colonie will travel to face Niskayuna on Thursday. Both teams will aim to build on their performances as the season progresses, with Colonie's defense setting a strong precedent for the weeks to come.
