The Indianapolis Colts have officially announced their initial active 53-man roster, and here’s one of the first looks, as they trimmed down their group from 90 players at the league’s 6 PM EST deadline:

— Indianapolis Colts (@Colts) August 30, 2026OFFENSE- Quarterback: No surprises here, as the Colts will go with the quarterback trio of Daniel Jones, Anthony Richardson Sr., and Riley Leonard—presumably in that order, as backup Easton Stick was cut on Sunday.
- Running Back: Rookie Seth McGowan has ascended to the 2nd-string backup behind star workhorse Jonathan Taylor, but it looks like 2nd-year running back DJ Giddens held off Ulysses Bentley IV for the third running back spot, despite being largely limited throughout training camp with a hamstring injury and still needing some work in pass protection. He presumably got the edge for his rushing ability.
- Wide Receiver: Based on preseason playing time allocation, it seemed like the Colts wide receiver group of Alec Pierce, Keenan Allen, Josh Downs, Ashton Dulin, and Laquon Treadwell was pretty well set, but Indy elected to keep rookie 7th round Deion Burks on the roster, with Coleman Owen going to the injured reserve with a concussion suffered on Saturday. That means Nick Westbrook-Ikhine was the odd man out here, which he may have become a bit redundant with the late offseason addition of veteran Keenan Allen. It’s worth noting that fellow wideout D.J. Montgomery was placed on injured reserve.
- Tight End: The Colts went with Tyler Warren, Drew Ogletree, and veteran Mo Alie-Cox, but backup Will Mallory (thumb) was placed on injured reserve with a designation to return, meaning he’ll still be with the Indianapolis organization but will miss at a minimum, the first four games of the 2026 regular season.
- Offfensive Line: The big news of the day came when the Colts acquired backup center Sedrick Van Pran-Granger from the Buffalo Bills, which meant Dalton Tucker would transition back to center (presumably at the expense of Josh Sills) for the other backup interior offensive line job along with rookie Jalen Farmer. Backup offensive tackle Luke Tenuta was surprisingly not listed, but will serve as a backup offensive tackle for at least Week 1, when cornerback Cam Taylor-Britt serves his one game suspension. Also of note is that the Colts finally pulled the plug on 2023 4th round pick Blake Freeland, who despite being an impressive athlete, never had that translate onto the field to consistently be a very effective blocking offensive tackle.
Defensive Line: The Colts pair of ‘Day 3’ rookie edges: George Gumbs Jr. and Caden Curry both made the active 53-man roster after impact preseason showings, which is an encouraging initial sign. Colts 2025 6th round pick Tim Smith which isn’t all that surprising given that Indy had to keep at least one natural backup interior defensive lineman, but what is, regards veteran Jerry Tillery, who didn’t perform all that well in preseason and training camp. The Colts cut Colby Wooden, who they acquired from the Green Bay Packers for Zaire Franklin.
Linebacker: Rookies CJ Allen and Bryce Boettcher were locks to make it along with veteran Akeem Davis Gaither, as well as Jaylon Carlies and Austin Ajiake. Undrafted rookie Tahj Chambers out of Ole Miss earns the last linebacker spot among the group and should be an immediate special teams contributor.
Cornerback: Not surprising, Sauce Gardner, Charvarius Ward, Justin Walley, and Cam Taylor-Britt all make the active roster—with Taylor-Britt having to serve a suspension in Week 1. Despite a rough preseason showing, backup cornerback Johnathan Edwards hangs on for his special teams work. Surprisingly, Jaylon Jones also is a holdover, as he played decently well in preseason, but the former starter doesn’t seem to be as natural a fit in Colts defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo’s defensive scheme.
Safety: The Colts only roll four deep here with veteran starter Cam Bynum, projected rookie starter AJ Haulcy, and then a pair of backups: Hunter Wohler and Jonathan Owens. It means that one of the Colts free agent signings earlier this offseason, Juanyeh Thomas, didn’t crack the Colts initial active 53-man roster. Also worth noting that fellow safety Daniel Scott, who’s struggled staying healthy in Indianapolis, was among the recent cuts. The former 2023 5th round pick had spent the past three seasons in Indianapolis, and they had initial high hopes.
SPECIAL TEAMSKicker: Obviously, no surprises at punter regarding longtime special teams fixtures: contract extended punter Rigoberto Sanchez and long snapper Luke Rhodes, but it was reported earlier on Sunday that returning placekicker Spencer Shrader beat out fellow kicker Blake Grupe, after the former had a strong preseason showing, especially from long distance. Shrader had some initial rust in training camp, returning from 2025 season-ending knee tears, but proved to be the stronger performer when the lights came on during preseason.
