The Washington Commanders have been under the spotlight since their surprising decision to release center Tyler Biadasz back in February. Fans and analysts alike have been eagerly awaiting general manager Adam Peters' next move regarding the center position, especially as the team appeared to be targeting Tyler Linderbaum in free agency. However, the unexpected market reset initiated by the Las Vegas Raiders complicated Washington's plans.
Throughout the offseason, both Peters and head coach Dan Quinn expressed their belief in Nick Allegretti as a viable replacement for Biadasz. Allegretti, who is entering his eighth NFL season and third with the Commanders, has primarily played guard during his career. Nevertheless, he did start two games at center last season, which seemed to bolster the Commanders' confidence in his ability to take on the role full-time.
As the offseason progressed, the team faced challenges in securing a center. After missing out on several free agents and failing to draft a center until the sixth round, they selected Matt Gulbin. While Gulbin is seen as a promising prospect, expectations were tempered regarding his readiness to start as a rookie. The Commanders' situation became more precarious when Allegretti suffered a calf strain on the first day of training camp, raising concerns about the depth at the center position.
With Allegretti sidelined, the Commanders turned to Julian Good-Jones, a player with minimal NFL experience, and Gulbin. However, both players struggled to demonstrate they could effectively fill the center role. Good-Jones was eventually released during the final roster cuts, although he was later re-signed to the practice squad. Meanwhile, Gulbin showed some potential but was not yet ready to step into a starting role.
Recently, Allegretti returned to practice, and the Commanders are optimistic about his availability for the season opener. Peters has faced pressure from fans to strengthen the center position, especially after the final roster cuts across the league. However, he has not made any additional moves to bring in a veteran center.
In a recent appearance on “Grant and Danny” on 106.7 The Fan in Washington, D.C., Peters addressed concerns about the offensive line and reiterated his confidence in Allegretti. "To answer your question, we don’t really listen to a whole lot outside the building," Peters stated. He emphasized the importance of making informed decisions and expressed his satisfaction with Allegretti's capabilities. "We feel really good with Nick, and we still feel really good with him. I think part of the concern, which again, I love having the fan base that wants us to win and wants to be great because that’s what we want, that’s what everybody wants, and the city deserves," he added.
Peters further elaborated on the situation, stating, "We feel great about Nick. We took his rehab a little bit slow, just being on the cautious side because we weren’t playing any games. Now, with two good starting-level centers and another on the practice squad, we feel really good about it right now, and I think you’ll see that in Week 1." His remarks reflect a strong belief in the current roster, even as some fans remain skeptical about the team's handling of the center position.
As the Commanders prepare for their season opener, the effectiveness of Peters' strategy will soon be put to the test. With Allegretti back in practice and Gulbin positioned as the backup, the team hopes to solidify its offensive line and quell any lingering concerns from the fanbase.
