Commanders make roster move at tackle ahead of final preseason game

The Washington Commanders released veteran offensive tackle Foster Sarell on Tuesday.  Sarell was signed by the Commanders back in March as a depth piece in their tackle room but ultimately failed to impress in training camp and the preseason.

Sarell has bounced around practice squads since 2021, but ultimately spent a good deal of time with the Los Angeles Chargers from 2022 to 2025.  While he hardly ever started any NFL games, he appeared in every game in 2023 and 11 games in 2024; in 2025, his involvement was limited to six games and one start.  During his final three years with Los Angeles, he also saw minimal special teams involvement.

When he was signed by Washington in 2025, he faced an uphill battle to make the roster with Laremy Tunsil Jr, Brandon Coleman, Trent Scott, George Fant and Andrew Wylie on the roster at tackle.  In the Commanders’ first unofficial depth chart, Sarell was listed as the fourth left tackle on the roster behind all three of those players.

Between Tunsil being injured and Sarell being released, the Commanders now have two tackles on the roster behind Coleman and right tackle Josh Conerly Jr. - Scott and Wylie.  Coleman is expected to start most of the season, beginning with Washington’s season opener against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sun. Sept. 13.
