Concerns Mount for Carolina Panthers' Defense Ahead of 2026 Season

As the Carolina Panthers gear up for the 2026 NFL season, the spotlight is firmly on their quarterback, Bryce Young, and how much he can elevate his performance compared to last year. However, a significant area of concern remains on the defensive side of the ball: the team's pass rush. After finishing among the bottom five in sacks for three consecutive seasons, the Panthers are eager to turn things around.

In an effort to bolster their defensive front seven, the Panthers made strategic moves during free agency, highlighted by the acquisitions of edge rusher Jaelan Phillips and linebacker Devin Lloyd. Both players were signed to lucrative contracts, signaling the team's commitment to improving their defensive capabilities.

The critical question now is whether defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero can transform this group into a formidable pass-rushing unit. NFL analyst Robert Mays from The Athletic has pointed out that the Panthers must find a way to elevate their pass rush from a dismal 32nd place ranking when rushing four players. Phillips is a key addition, but the overall effectiveness of the pass rush will depend on more than just his individual talent.

Compounding the challenge for the Panthers is the injury to Turk Wharton, who struggled to make an impact last season, and the loss of Nic Scourton, who is out for the year. These setbacks leave the Panthers with significant pressure on players like Pat Jones II and Princely Umanmielen to step up and fill the void opposite Phillips.

As Mays emphasizes, the effectiveness of the pass rush is not solely reliant on personnel changes. Evero has historically been cautious with blitzing, opting for a more conservative approach. While he found success with a blitz strategy against the Los Angeles Rams in a playoff game, he may need to embrace a more aggressive style if the Panthers hope to generate the pressure necessary to compete effectively in the league.

With the season fast approaching, the Panthers' ability to address these defensive concerns will be crucial. The effectiveness of their pass rush could very well dictate their success in the upcoming season, making it a focal point for fans and analysts alike.
