PENINSULA — The excitement of Week 3 in the OHSAA high school football season brings a thrilling matchup between Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy (CVCA) and Woodridge High School. The game is set to kick off at 7 p.m. on Friday, September 4, at Lahoski Field, nestled within the scenic Cuyahoga Valley National Park.
Woodridge enters this contest with an impressive 2-0 record, marking their best start since 2016. The Bulldogs are looking to continue their momentum after a strong opening to the season. On the other hand, CVCA, with a record of 1-1, is eager to build on their recent success after a decisive 49-7 victory over Canton South in Week 2, following a loss in their season opener.
Last season, CVCA had a dominant performance against Woodridge, winning decisively with a score of 49-0. This history adds an extra layer of intensity to the matchup, as Woodridge aims to turn the tables on their rivals.
Key players for Woodridge include quarterback Blake Pumper, who has emerged as a standout this season. In the previous game against Brookside, Pumper set a school record by throwing for seven touchdowns and accumulating 417 passing yards. Running back Johnathan Tyree adds to the Bulldogs' offensive threat, having scored both rushing and receiving touchdowns in their last outing. The team also boasts a deep receiving corps, featuring talents like Carter Maxa and Andrew Stull, who are crucial for Pumper's aerial attack.
On the flip side, CVCA's strategy will heavily rely on their running game, which has proven effective thus far. In their recent win, Tommy Kopec and Zac Anderson were instrumental, with Kopec rushing for 191 yards and three touchdowns, while Anderson contributed 153 yards and three touchdowns of his own. Quarterback Alex Mamone will lead the offense, with additional support from Reed Jones and Mason Frye, who are expected to make significant contributions from the backfield.
Coaching plays a vital role in the success of both teams. CVCA is led by Nick Cook, who is in his sixth season with the Royals and has achieved a commendable record of 45-17. Meanwhile, John Daraio, in his second year at the helm of Woodridge, has guided the Bulldogs to an 8-4 record, showcasing his ability to develop the team further.
As the teams prepare to clash, fans can anticipate a competitive game filled with talent and determination. The outcome will not only impact the standings but also set the tone for the remainder of the season for both programs.
