Dale Earnhardt Jr. recently opened up about how NASCAR played a pivotal role in arranging a meeting with Hollywood star Tom Cruise at Daytona International Speedway. Initially, Earnhardt had no plans to stay for the Cup Series race, but NASCAR intervened to ensure the two could connect.
During a promotional event for the upcoming sequel to the iconic film 'Days of Thunder,' Cruise, alongside actress Anne Hathaway, made an appearance at Daytona. This film marks a significant reunion for Cruise and producer Jerry Bruckheimer, who also produced the successful 'Top Gun: Maverick' and was involved in the Formula 1 film.
On the latest episode of his podcast, Dale Jr. Download, Earnhardt recounted the circumstances surrounding his meeting with Cruise. He explained, “We went to the O’Reilly race. Well, NASCAR was like, ‘Hey, man, Tom wants to meet you. You got to spend the night and get up in the morning, and Tom wants to meet you.’” This led to an early morning rendezvous at the NASCAR hangar on race day.
Earnhardt described the moment Cruise arrived, stating, “Tom flies his own plane. Tom lands his plane at Daytona, taxis right up to the hangar. We walked out to the plane. He gets off, and we sit there and talk for probably 20 minutes. I got to meet his family and folks that were with him.” This personal encounter highlighted the intersection of motorsports and Hollywood, a theme prevalent in the original 'Days of Thunder' film.
Additionally, Tom Cruise participated in the drivers’ meeting prior to the Coke Zero Sugar 400, further emphasizing his involvement in the NASCAR community. The original 'Days of Thunder' film featured real NASCAR drivers like Greg Sacks and Bobby Hamilton, who drove modified cars for filming, a practice that is expected to continue in the sequel with Cruise reprising his role as Cole Trickle.
Interestingly, Cruise was instrumental in the creation of the original 1990 film, initially conceiving the story before handing it over to writer Robert Towne. Directed by the late Tony Scott, 'Days of Thunder' became a box office success, grossing over $150 million worldwide and solidifying its place in racing film history.
In the same podcast episode, Earnhardt Jr. revealed his collaboration with Will Staples, the lead writer of 'Days of Thunder 2.' The two met at last year's season finale in Phoenix and later reconvened at Earnhardt's home in North Carolina to discuss the film's development.
Earnhardt expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating, “I’m excited about it. I am thrilled that they’re wanting to do this. And so I can’t wait to see, you know, in talking with Will, I keep telling him, there’ll be some things that they can’t lean into with the old movie, but there’ll be some things that they can.” He also requested that Staples include Easter eggs that connect back to the original film, ensuring that fans of the classic will have elements to look forward to in the sequel.
