STANFORD, Calif. — The Miami Hurricanes showcased their offensive prowess in their season opener, defeating Stanford 45-6 on Friday night. Quarterback Darian Mensah made an impressive debut, throwing five touchdown passes, while receiver Malachi Toney set a school record with 234 receiving yards, highlighting the team's potential this season.
Mensah, who transferred from Duke during the offseason, expressed his eagerness to take the field. "I was just eager to get on the field. It’s been a long offseason. It took a lot to get to where I’m at today so I was just ready to go," he stated. His performance certainly reflected that readiness, as he quickly established a connection with Toney, who was a standout player last season.
The duo wasted no time making their mark, with Mensah and Toney connecting for touchdowns on Miami's first two drives. Their chemistry culminated in a record-setting 47-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter, breaking the previous record held by Eddie Brown, who had 220 yards receiving in a game against Boston College in 1984.
Toney expressed pride in breaking the record, saying, "It means a lot knowing how many greats played at this university. For me to be the player to break that record and set a new one, it just means a whole lot." His performance not only set a new benchmark but also demonstrated his growth as a player after a successful freshman season.
Mensah's impact was felt immediately, as he threw a 48-yard pass to Toney on his very first play. He capped the opening drive with a 23-yard touchdown pass to Toney, followed by a 2-yard touchdown connection on the next possession. Toney celebrated both touchdowns with a Heisman pose, energizing the Hurricanes fans in attendance.
"You couldn’t draw it up any better," Mensah remarked. "If you got one on one, if you’re leaving No. 1 one on one, that’s a problem. So just seeing that pre-snap just made it that much easier for me. ... You want to go out and punch a team in the mouth." Mensah's performance was not just about Toney; he also connected with Daylyn Upshaw for a touchdown and threw a 34-yard pass to Cooper Barkate.
Finishing the game with an impressive 27 completions out of 30 attempts for 401 yards, Mensah set records for the most yards and touchdowns in a debut for Miami. Last season, he led all power conference quarterbacks with 3,973 passing yards, and his partnership with Toney, who had 109 receptions for 1,211 yards last year, promises to be a formidable combination.
On the opposing side, Stanford's quarterback Davis Warren threw for 214 yards but struggled to find the end zone. Coach Tavita Pritchard noted the team's inability to finish drives, stating, "There were spots tonight where we moved the football. We got down in the red zone a couple of times. We got to finish. I think that’s what that spoke to. We got to find consistency, and we got to finish in the end zone." This loss marked a setback for Stanford, who had hoped to start the season 2-0 for the first time since 2018.
The Hurricanes' offensive display in their opener reinforces their status as one of the top teams in the Atlantic Coast Conference, while Stanford will need to regroup and improve as they continue their season.
