Dave Roberts Provides Update on Shohei Ohtani's Knee Pain Following Slide Incident

Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts addressed the media on Wednesday regarding the health of superstar Shohei Ohtani, following concerns about knee pain stemming from a slide during a game on Tuesday. Roberts confirmed that while Ohtani is experiencing discomfort, the injury is not severe enough to sideline him from playing.

In his remarks to reporters, including Dodgers Nation’s Ava Brand, Roberts noted, “I know there’s times that people talk about him wincing around third base, but everything that he’s told me and the training staff, he feels good.” Despite this optimism, the manager acknowledged that Ohtani's ongoing injuries are affecting his ability to contribute fully, particularly as a pitcher and potentially as an outfielder.

Ohtani's injury occurred during the fifth inning of Tuesday's game against the Detroit Tigers when he was forced to dive back to third base after teammate Mookie Betts hit a double. After the play, Ohtani appeared to be in pain, laying on the base path for a brief moment before returning to his feet. Fortunately for Dodgers fans, he was included in Wednesday's lineup, suggesting that the discomfort may have been temporary.

However, this incident adds to a troubling list of injuries for Ohtani this season. Earlier in the year, he has been managing pain in his left knee due to a condition known as bipartite patella, which means his kneecap has two separate bones instead of one fused bone, causing him ongoing discomfort. Now, with pain reported in his right knee, there are growing concerns about his overall health and performance.

In addition to knee issues, Ohtani has dealt with arm soreness and a blister on his throwing hand earlier in the season, which has hindered his pitching capabilities. These injuries have already impacted his preseason aspirations of winning the Cy Young Award and have jeopardized his chances of securing a fourth consecutive MVP title, especially as other players like Chicago Cubs center fielder Pete Crow-Armstrong are excelling.

The Dodgers, who are in pursuit of a three-peat, need Ohtani to regain his form as a dominant designated hitter. His performance this season has not matched the extraordinary levels he has set in recent years. After posting an OPS above 1.000 for three straight seasons, Ohtani's current OPS stands at .911, which, while still impressive, is below his usual standard. Additionally, his slugging percentage has dropped from over .620 in previous seasons to .529 this year.

As the season progresses, it remains to be seen how these injuries will affect Ohtani's performance and the Dodgers' playoff aspirations. With the team relying heavily on his contributions, fans and management alike are hopeful that he can overcome these challenges and return to his peak form.
