At just one year old, Daylen Hocker celebrated his first Halloween dressed as a football, marking the beginning of his lifelong passion for the sport. Now a 5-foot-11, 170-pound junior, Hocker has become a vital player for the Muhlenberg County Mustangs, who are off to a strong start this fall with a perfect record of 2-0. The Mustangs have achieved this success with impressive victories over McLean County, winning 7-0, and a dominating 63-0 shutout against Webster County.

In their first two games, the Mustangs have showcased a solid defense, managing to shut out their opponents completely. Hocker, who can play multiple positions on both sides of the ball, expressed his excitement about the team's chemistry and performance. "I really like how we’ve come together and how we play together as a team," he said. Hocker believes the team is beginning to find its rhythm, which is crucial for any successful football squad. He added, "We’re starting to dial in like good football teams do, and this is an encouraging sign. We’re more experienced on both offense and defense, and, hopefully, we’ll continue to gain momentum and confidence."

Hocker's contributions in the game against Webster County were significant, as he rushed for 19 yards and a touchdown, while also catching two passes for 37 yards and two additional touchdowns. His versatility has made him an essential asset for the Mustangs. Head coach Josh Staples praised Hocker's explosive playing style, noting, "He’s a very versatile player for us, and we’ve utilized him as a running back, defensive back, and outside linebacker at various times." Staples also reflected on Hocker's resilience, as he led the running backs last season despite suffering a knee injury that sidelined him for three games.

After undergoing surgery to repair a meniscus tear in his left knee, Hocker has returned to the field feeling better than ever. He shared, "It’s great — no pain, and I’m running around with confidence like I did before the injury." His recovery involved extensive physical therapy, but he is now focused on helping his team secure victories. As a freshman, Hocker was a part-time starter, but he quickly developed into a full-time player in his sophomore year, accumulating 384 rushing yards and three touchdowns, along with solid defensive statistics.

Hocker enjoys the challenge of playing different positions and is continually learning to improve his skills. "I love playing all over the field," he stated. He is particularly focused on enhancing his running back abilities, recognizing the importance of cutback lanes, while also feeling confident in his receiving skills. He remarked, "As a receiver, I feel like I have pretty good hands and am capable of making big plays for us." Hocker's dedication to the game is evident, as he prefers to remain on the field as much as possible, excluding special teams.

His relationship with Coach Staples, who previously coached Hocker's father, adds a personal touch to his experience. Hocker appreciates the balance Staples brings to coaching, saying, "When it’s time to get serious, he gets serious — and so do we." Looking ahead, the Mustangs are aiming to improve their record to 3-0 as they prepare to face Edmonson County, a team that recently rebounded from a tough loss to secure a win against Clinton County. Last season, Hocker played a pivotal role in the Mustangs' narrow victory over the Wildcats, scoring the game-winning touchdown.

As the Mustangs gear up for their next challenge, Hocker emphasizes the importance of continuous improvement. "We just need to keep plugging, keep working to become a better football team one game at a time," he said. With a strong focus on teamwork and leadership, Hocker and the Mustangs are determined to leverage their experience and build on their early success this season.
