Deepak Hooda, the explosive batter known for his all-round capabilities, is making a significant return to his home team, Baroda, in domestic cricket. This move comes five years after he left the team for Rajasthan, marking a notable chapter in his cricketing career. Baroda Cricket Association (BCA) CEO Snehal Parikh confirmed the development, stating, "Yes, Deepak is coming back to Baroda. He and Krunal (Pandya) have spoken to each other. Everything is sorted between them."
The journey back to Baroda for Hooda has been anything but straightforward. His departure in 2021 followed a tumultuous period marked by a ban for alleged indiscipline. The incident that led to his exit involved accusations against Baroda's then-captain, Krunal Pandya, regarding inappropriate behavior and language that Hooda claimed left him feeling demoralized and pressured.
Since leaving Baroda, Hooda has made a name for himself in domestic cricket, joining Rajasthan for the 2021-22 season. His performances have been impressive, showcasing his batting prowess and versatility as an all-rounder. In 67 first-class matches, he has amassed 4,267 runs at an impressive average of 45.39, including 14 centuries and a highest score of 293 not out. Additionally, he has contributed with the ball, taking 29 wickets with a best of five for 31.
Hooda's record in List A cricket is equally commendable, with 3,340 runs at an average of 38.83, featuring six centuries. In T20 cricket, he has played 230 matches, scoring 3,972 runs at an average of 24.67, including two centuries and a top score of 108. His international experience includes appearances in 10 ODIs and 21 T20Is, although his last match for India was against New Zealand on February 1, 2023.
Alongside Hooda's return, the BCA has also announced that wicketkeeper-batter Jitesh Sharma will continue to play for Baroda as a guest player, but only in white-ball formats. This arrangement allows Baroda to strengthen its squad as they prepare for upcoming domestic competitions.
In another development, the BCA has appointed former Indian fast bowler Munaf Patel as the pace bowling coach and mentor for its academy in Vadodara. This move is expected to enhance the training and development of young bowlers in the region, further solidifying Baroda's cricketing legacy.
