Dejan Kulusevski, the talented winger for Tottenham Hotspur, is currently facing the prospect of a driving ban after being caught speeding multiple times. The 26-year-old Swedish international has been prosecuted by the Metropolitan Police following an incident where he was recorded driving at 43 mph in a 30 mph zone in the Limehouse Link tunnel last September.
Kulusevski, who has made a significant impact since joining Spurs in 2022, pleaded guilty to the speeding charge last week. The incident occurred on September 28, 2022, at approximately 3:39 PM. As a result of this offense, the Metropolitan Police indicated that he would accumulate at least 12 penalty points on his driving license, which could lead to a six-month ban.
In light of his situation, Kulusevski submitted an email to the court detailing his mitigating circumstances. He explained that he would be unable to attend the court session in person due to his training commitments, particularly after missing the entirety of last season and the 2026 World Cup due to injury.
In his correspondence, Kulusevski emphasized the importance of having access to his vehicle. He stated, "My young family need me to drive them to various appointments and in case there are necessities to go to a hospital with them I have to be on hand." This highlights the personal responsibilities he has outside of football, which he argues necessitate his ability to drive.
Additionally, he pointed out that his role as a professional athlete often requires him to travel during late hours, particularly after away games. Kulusevski noted, "I also drive to work and back where the hours can be antisocial, e.g., I return from an away game very late at night." Despite acknowledging that he was indeed speeding, Kulusevski mentioned that his offenses were generally just above the varying speed limits in London. He expressed an understanding of the seriousness of the situation while seeking leniency from the court.
Kulusevski's case is set to be reviewed at a sentencing hearing on September 21 at Barkingside Magistrates’ Court. Under UK law, drivers who accumulate 12 penalty points can appeal to a magistrate to avoid a ban, but they must demonstrate that such a disqualification would cause "exceptional hardship."
