Derby County manager John Eustace has announced that the team will be dealing with significant injury setbacks as they prepare to face West Ham United. Veteran defender Craig Forsyth is expected to be sidelined for several months due to a knee injury, which he sustained during a recent match.
Forsyth underwent a scan after being forced off the pitch, and Eustace revealed that the initial diagnosis is concerning. "He’s in a bit of a bad way. He’s had a scan on his knee. It doesn’t look good," Eustace stated. The defender is scheduled to see a specialist, with hopes that the injury will not be season-ending. However, Eustace acknowledged that Forsyth's absence will be felt for an extended period.
In the previous match against Portsmouth, Forsyth had delivered a standout performance, earning praise from Eustace, who noted the player's loyalty and commitment to the club. "I thought his performance on Tuesday was magnificent, and it really typified what he’s all about, what the football club’s all about," he said. Forsyth's leadership and experience have been invaluable, especially during challenging times, and losing him is considered a significant blow to the team.
In addition to Forsyth, Eustace confirmed that midfielder Lewis Travis will also be unavailable for approximately three to four weeks due to injury. Fortunately, the severity of Travis's condition is not as dire as initially feared. "Trav is going to be missing for probably three or four weeks as well," Eustace mentioned, expressing relief that the injury is not long-term.
The manager emphasized the importance of maintaining a healthy squad throughout the demanding 46-game season, stating, "Obviously, it’s not as bad as what we all feared, which is great news. Everyone’s going to be used throughout the season, so we don’t want long-term injuries to anyone, and everyone will be needed for sure."
Derby County will also be without several other players, including Carlton Morris, Matt Clarke, Derry Murkin, and Patrick Agyemang, as they head into their upcoming match against West Ham on Saturday. The mounting injury list poses a challenge for Eustace as he seeks to field a competitive side against a formidable opponent.
As Derby County navigates these challenges, the club's resilience and depth will be tested. Eustace's ability to adapt and motivate the remaining squad members will be crucial as they aim to secure a positive result against West Ham.
