In a recent interview, Derby County's chief executive Stephen Pearce addressed the ramifications of a failed takeover that nearly materialized in August. Owner David Clowes, a lifelong supporter of the Rams and a Derbyshire property developer, remains dedicated to funding the club's aspirations for promotion to the Premier League, despite the setback.
Clowes had been on the verge of selling the Championship club to Turki Al-Sheikh, a prominent Saudi Arabian government official, with an agreement already in place and approvals granted by both the Independent Football Regulator (IFR) and the English Football League (EFL). However, just an hour before the deal was set to finalize, Al-Sheikh unexpectedly withdrew his interest, leaving the club in a state of uncertainty.
Pearce described the situation as a significant disruption, stating that the prolonged scrutiny of the bid had put Derby in a "holding pattern" throughout much of the summer transfer window. The abrupt collapse of the deal caught everyone off guard, with Pearce noting, "The wind was taken out of our sails, totally." He emphasized that the club was not prepared for such an outcome, especially so close to the anticipated completion of the sale.
Despite the disappointment, Pearce highlighted the resilience of the club's management and players. "We regrouped and everybody got back on the horse," he remarked, indicating a determination to push forward with their plans for the season. Clowes had already allocated a budget for new signings, which allowed the club to act quickly in the transfer market even after the failed takeover.
During the period leading up to the aborted deal, Clowes authorized significant investments in player acquisitions. This included a £6 million permanent transfer for Bobby Clark from RB Salzburg, a loan-to-buy agreement for Sam Szmodics from Ipswich for £2.7 million, and a £600,000 deal for Alex Mowatt from West Bromwich Albion. Pearce praised Clowes for his commitment, stating, "He thought the takeover was going to happen, he knew he was never going to get a penny back for all of that money he spent on those players and he still did it."
Following the failed takeover, Clowes decided to withdraw Derby County from the market and refocus efforts on strengthening the squad. This included a £4 million investment in David Ozoh from Crystal Palace, alongside several free transfers and loans, which included a reunion with Eiran Cashin on transfer deadline day.
When questioned about whether the disrupted summer had hindered the club's promotion ambitions, Pearce was adamant that it had not. "Not in the slightest, otherwise we wouldn’t have spent all the money we’ve spent," he asserted, reinforcing the club's commitment to progress this season. As Derby County continues its campaign in the Championship, the focus remains firmly on achieving their goal of returning to the Premier League.
