The Detroit Lions are navigating a challenging offseason, particularly in their cornerback position, following the release of Terrion Arnold due to his recent arrest. This decision has led to scrutiny regarding the team's preparedness and depth at the position. However, General Manager Brad Holmes has expressed confidence in the cornerback group, insisting that they have a solid lineup regardless of Arnold's absence.
In a recent statement, Holmes affirmed, "We like the guys we have in this room," indicating that the organization believes in the capabilities of their current roster. The Lions have opted to retain seven cornerbacks, each fulfilling specific roles that the coaching staff values. This strategic decision reflects Holmes' belief in the team's depth and versatility.
Detroit's offseason moves included drafting a cornerback and signing one in free agency, as well as re-signing a key player. Holmes pointed out that D.J. Reed will return as a starter, alongside Rock Ya-Sin, who is expected to start opposite Reed. "Rock played really good football for us last year; he had a really good camp this year," Holmes noted, highlighting Ya-Sin's contributions and familiarity with the defense.
Ya-Sin, who is entering his eighth season in the NFL, has accumulated 45 career starts, including six games for the Lions last year. His experience is seen as an asset as the Lions aim to solidify their secondary. Holmes also emphasized the importance of depth, mentioning Ennis Rakestraw's improved health and potential, as well as the contributions of newcomers like Roger McCreary and draft pick Keith Abney. "He’s been a quick study," Holmes remarked about Abney, indicating optimism about his integration into the team.
Holmes further elaborated on the cornerback lineup, noting that Khalil Dorsey is also in contention due to his special teams performance. "You still got Dors, who I think has been one of the better gunners in the league," he stated, reinforcing the idea that the Lions have a well-rounded group to tackle the upcoming season.
Despite the changes in the roster, including the anticipated shift in four of the five starters from last year, Holmes remains unfazed. Rock Ya-Sin's addition will be crucial, as he is expected to start alongside Reed, while either Abney or McCreary will likely fill the slot position. The safety positions are also undergoing changes, with both Brian Branch and Kerby Joseph starting the year on the PUP list. This situation will lead to Avonte Maddox and Chuck Clark stepping into starting roles, with Maddox having served in a depth capacity last season and Clark being a recent free agent addition from the Pittsburgh Steelers.
