The Detroit Lions announced the signing of offensive lineman Gus Hartwig to its 90-man roster on Tuesday.

Hartwig, 24, signed with the New York Jets as an undrafted free agent in 2025. The 6-foot-5, 309-pound center was waived/injured in July of 2025 and missed his entire rookie season after suffering an injury during training camp and he reverted to their injured reserve.

New York waived Hartwig once again this offseason with an injury designation and he reverted to their physically unable to perform list. The Jets then cut Hartwig before its rookie minicamp.

Hartwig provides some much-needed depth at center for the Lions to close training camp and ahead of its final preseason game on Saturday at the Indianapolis Colts.

Starting center Cade Mays is out for the Lions with a wrist injury. Reserve center Michael Niese was injured over the weekend during the Lions' second preseason game against the Washington Commanders. Niese was spotted after the game on crutches.

That left the Lions with Juice Scruggs and Seth McLaughlin. Now, Hartwig joins that mix as the Lions head down the home stretch of their offseason.
