As the San Francisco 49ers prepare for the upcoming NFL season, all eyes are on rookie wide receiver De’Zhaun Stribling. Selected in the second round of this year’s draft, Stribling has quickly become a focal point in training camp, raising questions about whether he can break any rookie records for the franchise.
Historically, rookie wide receivers have faced challenges under head coach Kyle Shanahan. The 49ers have seen limited success from their first-year pass catchers, with only Brandon Aiyuk and Deebo Samuel surpassing 35 receptions in their respective rookie seasons. Both players also managed to exceed 500 receiving yards, a benchmark that has proven difficult for their predecessors.
Ricky Pearsall, another recent rookie, had a noteworthy finish to his season with 31 receptions for 400 yards, but his performance came with an asterisk as he struggled early on. Meanwhile, Dante Pettis caught 27 passes for 467 yards during his rookie campaign, and Jauan Jennings, who technically remained a rookie in 2021, recorded 24 receptions for 282 yards. Jennings did tie for second in franchise history for rookie receiving touchdowns, but overall, the trend has not favored rookie wideouts in San Francisco.
Despite these historical hurdles, ESPN's Dan Graziano has suggested that Stribling could defy the odds. Graziano noted, "Don’t be surprised if De’Zhaun Stribling leads all rookie wide receivers in catches." This assertion comes amid the backdrop of the 49ers' current roster, which includes veteran wide receivers like Mike Evans, Demarcus Robinson, and Deebo Samuel. While Evans is expected to be the team's top receiver, he is currently dealing with injuries, which may open the door for Stribling to step up.
Trent Williams, the 49ers' left tackle, has expressed optimism about Stribling's potential, comparing him to former receiver Jauan Jennings in terms of route variety but noting that Stribling possesses greater speed. This combination of skills could make him a prime target for quarterback Brock Purdy, who may look to Stribling frequently as the season unfolds.
The 49ers did not draft Stribling to sit on the sidelines; he is expected to contribute significantly right away. His unique skill set offers a different dimension compared to the other receivers on the roster, who are seen as role players at this stage in their careers. Stribling's impressive preseason performance has further solidified his status as a player to watch.
While Stribling may not match the standout seasons of Aiyuk and Samuel, he has the potential to achieve impressive numbers as a rookie. Historical comparisons suggest that he could aim for a performance similar to J.J. Stokes or Terrell Owens, both of whom had over 500 receiving yards and around 35 receptions in their rookie years. Since 2021, 11 rookie receivers have surpassed 1,000 yards, with another five achieving 900-yard seasons. A reasonable projection for Stribling could be in line with George Pickens’ performance in 2022, where he recorded 52 receptions for 801 yards and four touchdowns.
As the 49ers gear up for the season, the anticipation surrounding De’Zhaun Stribling continues to grow. With the right opportunities and a strong start, he could very well leave his mark on the franchise’s rookie receiving records.
