Since the 2026 recruiting cycle came to an end, no greater debate regarding the 2027 class has been quite as heated as the one surrounding the top three running back prospects headlining the class.
Georgia five-star commit Kemon Spell, Tennessee five-star commit David Gabriel Georges and Texas five-star commit Landen Williams-Callis have all been regarded for the past year as three of the best running back prospects we've seen for some time.
All three enter the season as USA TODAY Sports preseason All-America first-team selections as well.
Debate over who is the best of those three is up for interpretation regardless of your fandom or just where you're from. Industry rankings have each of the three within striking distance of each other entering their senior seasons.
While we won't declare a definitive winner in that conversation, USA TODAY Sports will track how each of the three fares week to week as they wrap up prolific high school careers and prepare for the next level.
High school football schedule, Week 2David Gabriel Georges, Baylor (TN): Gabriel Georges saw less action in Baylor's 37-12 win over Loudoun Sports Academy (VA). But he did find the end zone. He finished his night with eight carries for 70 yards and a touchdown.
Kemon Spell, McKeesport (PA): Spell kicked off his season with only four carries in a 61-0 win over Brashear. He made the most of those four carries, though, scoring three times and totaling 73 yards.
Landen Williams-Callis, Randle (TX): Williams-Callis' quest for 10,000 yards kicked off with a bang in a rematch of last year's Class 5A Division 2 state championship. He carried the ball 33 times for 230 yards and two touchdowns in a 20-14 win over South Oak Cliff.
High school football schedule, Week 1David Gabriel Georges, Baylor (TN): Gabriel Georges and the Red Raiders shined on national television as they beat Brentwood Academy 38-20 in a rematch of last year's DII-AAA championship. Gabriel Georges would not be denied in the win, rushing for 179 yards, adding another 65 through the air and scoring three fourth-quarter touchdowns.
Kemon Spell, McKeesport (PA): Spell and the Tigers were off this week as they kick off the season at Brashear on Aug. 28.
Landen Williams-Callis, Randle (TX): Williams-Callis and the Lions were off this week as they kick off the season at home against South Oak Cliff on Aug. 28.
