LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Los Angeles Dodgers have announced that starting pitcher Eric Lauer has been placed on the injured list due to left elbow inflammation. This decision comes after a difficult performance in which Lauer surrendered seven runs and eight hits over just three innings in a 13-8 defeat to the St. Louis Cardinals on Tuesday.
In his 14 appearances this season, which includes 12 starts, Lauer has compiled a record of 7-2 with a 4.50 ERA. Following the game against the Cardinals, Lauer expressed his frustration, stating, "I felt good warming up, felt good in the bullpen and then got out there and kind of just lost it." He did not indicate any injury concerns during his post-game comments, suggesting that he may have been overthinking his mechanics. "I think I might have been tinkering a little too much in between. I don’t think that there’s something glaringly wrong," he added.
Lauer joined the Dodgers on May 17 after being acquired from the Toronto Blue Jays in exchange for cash considerations. His time with Toronto was challenging, as he posted a 1-5 record with a 6.69 ERA across eight games. In contrast, last season with the Brewers, Lauer had a much more successful campaign, finishing with a 9-2 record and a 3.18 ERA.
To accommodate Lauer's placement on the injured list, the Dodgers have moved relief pitcher Will Klein to the 60-day injured list. This roster adjustment highlights the ongoing challenges the team faces with injuries as they navigate through the season.
In a positive development for the Dodgers, reliever Blake Treinen has made his return to the team after being sidelined since June 20 due to right elbow inflammation. Treinen has been impressive during his rehabilitation, achieving a perfect 0.00 ERA with eight strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings across seven rehab appearances at Low-A Ontario and Triple-A Oklahoma City. This season, Treinen has contributed significantly to the Dodgers, holding a 4-1 record with a 3.52 ERA in 29 games.
The Dodgers are currently looking to stabilize their pitching rotation as they aim for a successful run in the latter part of the season. The loss of Lauer, who has shown flashes of potential, adds to the pressure on the remaining pitchers to step up in his absence.
