As the 2026 NFL season approaches, Drew Stevens, a rookie kicker for the Washington Commanders, is keenly aware of the rarity of his position. With only 32 kickers on NFL rosters worldwide, Stevens has achieved a remarkable milestone by winning the kicking spot during the Commanders' training camp. He triumphed over incumbent kicker Jake Moody, who has since signed with the Baltimore Ravens and is now on their practice squad.
Stevens is not just another player; he is poised to make his NFL debut on September 13 against the Philadelphia Eagles, a moment he has been eagerly anticipating. In a recent interview with Mitch Tischler of Monumental Sports Network, Stevens expressed his excitement about stepping onto the field for his first game. "It's fun; I mean there are only 32 guys, by the numbers, that get to do that in the whole world for my position," he stated. His gratitude for reaching this point in his career is palpable, as he reflects on the journey that brought him here.
His path to the NFL has not been straightforward. Stevens faced significant challenges early in his career, including a lack of scholarship offers when he was looking to kick at the collegiate level. He received only three offers from South Carolina, Iowa, and North Carolina State, all of which were for preferred walk-on positions. It was not until his sophomore season at the University of Iowa that he earned a scholarship after demonstrating his talent and perseverance.
"I would like to think I have worked hard to be where I am. My whole life, a walk-on, then an undrafted free agent. Even in high school, I had to win the job. It wasn’t like I was just the higher guy age-wise. So yeah, everything is earned. I wouldn’t have it any other way. I don’t think it would make me the player I am today," Stevens shared, highlighting his determination and work ethic.
As he prepares for his first two games against formidable NFC East rivals, the Philadelphia Eagles and the Dallas Cowboys, Stevens is focused on making a positive impact. The Commanders organization and their fans are hopeful that his journey will lead to a successful and enduring career in Washington. With the season kicking off soon, all eyes will be on Stevens as he takes on the challenge of being one of the league's elite kickers.
