Eagles host rookie free agent on tryout

News of the Philadelphia Eagles waiving players has already begun to leak out but the team did not officially file any roster cuts today, according the NFL’s August 29 personnel notice.

There were two Eagles transactions listed, however. Here’s an overview:

• The Eagles terminated CB Tariq Castro-Fields from injured reserve with an injury settlement.
• The Eagles hosted EDGE Mason Reiger on a tryout.

Let’s sort through these items on a player-by-player basis.

TARIQ CASTRO-FIELDS

TCF was having a decent summer before suffering a heel injury that landed him on injured reserve on August 21. Now he’s leaving Philly after reaching an injury settlement with the team.

MASON REIGER

Reiger, who turned 24 earlier this month, played college football for Louisville and Wisconsin before signing with the Miami Dolphins as an undrafted rookie free agent following the 2026 NFL Draft.

Here’s a scouting report on him from NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein, who tabbed him as a potential fifth-round pick:

Reiger is a tall, linear edge rusher with a slender frame. He doesn’t look like a pro pre-snap, but he certainly plays like one after the snap. He lacks the size/anchor to consistently set the edge and can be controlled when tackles latch on, but he’s unusually talented to work off contact for quick wins at the point of attack. He’s a short-striding rusher who takes similar tracks at similar speeds and is more pressure-creator than sack-finisher at this time. However, altering his approach (tempo and angles) and adding a better inside counter could create a bump in his sack production. Reiger needs more mass and refinement but could become a good rotational odd-front edge in time.

Reiger played 23 snaps in the Dolphins’ first preseason game, logging one sack and one TFL. There was also talk of him impressing in practice before Miami abrupt waived him with an injury designation on August 18.

The Eagles might’ve wanted to take a look at Reiger to check in on his medical situation. Could be a good addition to the practice squad or they could look to stash him at the bottom of their roster?
