Ebel brothers share an at-bat in Brewers minor-league stat quirk

It's already been a cool story for brothers Brady and Trey Ebel, first-round draft picks by the Milwaukee Brewers a year apart in 2025 and 2026.

The story got a new twist Aug. 25 when they shared an at-bat for the Class A Wilson Warbirds … even though they haven't shared a field in their pro careers.

The Warbirds continued a suspended game from July 19 as part of a doubleheader against Hickory on Aug. 25, a game that got paused during the middle of a six-run rally in the first inning, with Brady in the middle of an at-bat and facing a 2-0 count.

But a little more than a month later, Brady (the No. 4 prospect in the organization according to MLB Pipeline) had been promoted to Class High A Wisconsin, although a different Ebel on the roster made for a logical mid-at-bat replacement.

Trey (No. 17 according to Pipeline), drafted by the Brewers a little more than a week before the initial game and now in his second week with the Warbirds, took his older brother's place in the box score as the shortstop and drew a walk.

Officially, Brady finished the game 0-for-0 with a hit by pitch, and Trey went 0-for-3 with two walks and a run scored. The Warbirds prevailed, 12-4, before dropping the nightcap, 8-5. Trey didn't play in that game.

The move was one of several that had to be made because of shifting rosters, with three defensive replacements and a different Hickory pitcher part of the continuation, as well.

When the Warbirds took the field, they had to make their own trio of defensive substitutions in addition to Ebel, including since-traded prospects Alexander Frias in center field and Juan Martinez at second base.

Trey is off to a decent start with the Warbirds, reaching base at a .471 clip through his first seven games, though the sample is obviously small.

Brady has only a .580 OPS in his first seven games with the Timber Rattlers, but his .822 mark for the year between Wilson and Wisconsin has boosted the 19-year-old's standing within the organizational prospect list.

Brady, as it happened, left his game early on the same night after a collision with teammate Daniel Dickinson on defense, though he walked off under his own power.
