On September 3, the Ephrata Tigers kicked off their volleyball season at home against the Omak Pioneers, suffering a 3-0 defeat in a nonleague matchup. Despite the loss, the Tigers are determined to use this experience as a foundation for growth throughout the season.
McKaidan Boyd, the newly appointed head coach of the Tigers, acknowledged the impact of first-game nerves on his young team, which includes several sophomores. "We scrimmaged hard the night before and came out really well, but today we just couldn’t apply that," Boyd stated, emphasizing the need for mental resilience as they move forward.
The first set saw Ephrata struggle early, as Omak quickly established a commanding lead. Although the Tigers made a push to close the gap, they ultimately fell 25-14. This initial setback, however, did not deter their spirit.
In the second set, Ephrata initially found their rhythm, even taking a six-point lead. The momentum shifted as Omak clawed their way back, tying the score at 21-21. The set turned into a nail-biting contest, with both teams exchanging points fiercely. In the end, Omak capitalized on crucial scoring opportunities, narrowly winning the set 31-29.
Despite being down two sets, Ephrata entered the third set with renewed intensity. However, they struggled to find their footing early on and, despite a mid-set rally, Omak maintained their dominance, closing the match with a 25-13 victory.
Boyd noted that the match served as a valuable learning experience for his team. He highlighted standout performances, particularly from libero Staci Guerrero, who was consistent in her passing and defensive efforts. Sidney Chornuk also shone on the outside, earning multiple kills and demonstrating her ability to deliver under pressure. "Every player knows they can just give her the ball and she’s going to put it away," Boyd remarked.
Chornuk expressed disappointment over the outcome but remains focused on fostering a positive team mentality. "I definitely want to reflect on our team’s mindsets and hopefully we can make them positive and stronger for the next game," she said, indicating her commitment to team cohesion.
As the Tigers prepare for their upcoming matches, Boyd is keen on addressing areas for improvement, particularly in defense and mental toughness. She emphasized the importance of not underestimating any opponent, regardless of their ranking, stating, "Obviously, they can come in and sweep you in three." Early practices have focused on refining their defensive strategies and enhancing their overall game execution.
With Boyd at the helm, her goals for the season include developing the mental fortitude of her players and nurturing their growth both on and off the court. She is already witnessing strong bonds forming among the team members and is excited about their potential as the season progresses. "Tonight was just a reflection of first-game nerves. A bunch of young ones coming out here on the big field, getting a feeling for it for the first time, and this is definitely not a reflection of who we are," she concluded.
The Tigers will look to bounce back in their next match against West Valley (Spokane) on September 5 at 7 p.m., eager to apply the lessons learned from their season opener.
