Danish defender Erik Sviatchenko is making a significant career move by departing the Houston Dynamo to join Port FC, a prominent club in Thailand's top division. This transition marks a new chapter for the 34-year-old player, who has spent the last several years in Major League Soccer (MLS).
Sviatchenko initially joined the Dynamo in March 2023, quickly becoming a vital part of the team's defensive lineup. Over his four-season tenure with Houston, he participated in 80 MLS matches, contributing to the club's successes, including a notable victory in the U.S. Open Cup in 2023. His performance was instrumental in helping the Dynamo set a club record for points in the 2024 season.
In a statement regarding Sviatchenko's departure, Dynamo general manager Pat Onstad expressed gratitude for the defender's contributions both on and off the field. "We want to thank Erik for his contributions to the Club on and off the field during his time in Houston," Onstad stated. He acknowledged that while the timing of Sviatchenko's exit was not ideal for the team, the organization supports his desire to explore new challenges outside of MLS.
As the current season progressed, Sviatchenko's role with the Dynamo shifted. After starting the first four matches of the season, he found himself primarily on the bench, having come off the bench twice and remaining an unused substitute on six occasions since the team resumed play following the World Cup break. Despite his reduced playing time, his experience and leadership were invaluable to the squad.
The Dynamo are currently performing well in the MLS, sitting in second place in the Western Conference standings with five wins, two draws, and one loss since mid-July. The team has been active in the transfer market, having recently signed striker Duncan McGuire and defender Marcelo Saracchi to bolster their roster.
Sviatchenko is not the only Dynamo player to leave during the summer transfer window. Forward Ezequiel Ponce recently transferred to Elche CF in Spain, while midfielder Ondřej Lingr joined Korona Kielce. Additionally, U.S. midfielder Jack McGlynn is reportedly close to finalizing a move to Stoke City in England.
Before his time in Houston, Sviatchenko enjoyed a successful stint with FC Midtjylland in Denmark, where he was recognized as the Danish Superliga Player of the Year for the 2019-20 season. His experience in both European and American leagues has equipped him with a wealth of knowledge that he will bring to Port FC as he embarks on this new adventure in Thailand.
