TCU completely dominated the Tar Heels, handing North Carolina a brutal 48-14 defeat last season. The two teams met again to open the 2026 season, but Bill Belichick’s squad made sure history did not repeat itself, stunning college football fans with a 15-10 victory over TCU in Dublin, Ireland, on Saturday.

Apart from the impressive victory, coach Belichick also found himself in the spotlight for displaying his familiar cold attitude toward one reporter, drawing some criticism from fans.

North Carolina came out strong in Dublin despite entering the season-opening matchup as 9.5-point underdogs. The Tar Heels quickly showed they were not intimidated by TCU.

However, even before the final whistle, the UNC head coach attracted attention for displaying the famously intense and single-minded mentality that has followed him throughout his coaching career.

During halftime, Belichick appeared to clash with an ESPN reporter who attempted to stop him while he was making his way through the area. Rather than acknowledging the reporter or changing his course, Belichick simply continued walking.

From Belichick’s perspective, anything that does not directly contribute to preparing the team or executing on the field can be viewed as an unnecessary distraction. His cold reaction appeared to reflect that mindset.

That brief moment quickly sparked plenty of conversation among college football fans.

“Bill hates everyone tour is back,” former NFL scout John Middlekauff remarked.

“Bill is locked in. ESPN should know better,” a comment read.

This season is a challenge for Belichick to prove his worth after his disappointing 4-8 campaign.

He made significant changes to his roster and coaching staff during the offseason in an effort to turn things around following last season’s struggles.

The UNC head coach brought in offensive coordinator Bobby Petrino and added Wisconsin transfer quarterback Billy Edwards Jr. to help rebuild an offense. Those additions already appeared to make a difference in the season opener.

The former NFL coach failed to attract significant interest from NFL teams after his departure from the New England Patriots. Instead, Belichick chose a completely different challenge by taking over North Carolina and entering college football for the first time as a head coach.

It is obviously far too early to draw major conclusions from a single game. Still, after North Carolina’s impressive opening victory, it may be time for college football fans to pump the brakes on the predictions of a Belichick collapse.
