Southern Miss football has officially announced that Ethan Hampton will be the starting quarterback for the 2026 season, set to debut against Alcorn State on September 5. The announcement was made by ESPN's Pete Thamel on September 4, confirming that Hampton has emerged victorious from a competitive three-player battle for the position.
Hampton, a transfer from Northern Illinois, has a notable background that includes starting ten games in 2024, where he showcased his skills by throwing for 1,600 yards, 12 touchdowns, and six interceptions. His standout performance came when he led Northern Illinois to a stunning upset over Notre Dame, throwing for 198 yards and a touchdown in that game. After a brief stint at Illinois in 2025, where he participated in only two games, Hampton is now poised to lead the Golden Eagles.
Throughout the offseason, Hampton faced stiff competition from senior Landry Lyddy and sophomore John White. However, his experience set him apart, as he is the only candidate among the trio with prior starting experience at the collegiate level. This experience could prove crucial as Southern Miss looks to build momentum heading into the new season.
Hampton's journey to the starting role was not without its challenges. He suffered a bone bruise to his hand during the team's first scrimmage on August 15, which sidelined him for the second scrimmage and several practices. Fortunately, he made a swift recovery and returned to practice on August 31, allowing him to regain his footing in the competition.
The Golden Eagles will kick off their 2026 campaign against Alcorn State at Renasant Stadium, with the game scheduled to start at 4 p.m. CT. This matchup will not only mark the beginning of the season for Southern Miss but also serve as a significant moment for Hampton as he steps into the spotlight as the team's leader on the field.
As the season progresses, all eyes will be on Hampton to see how he adapts to his new role and how his leadership will influence the Golden Eagles' performance. With a challenging schedule ahead, including a game against Auburn on September 12, the stakes are high for Southern Miss as they aim to make a mark in the 2026 season.
