GLASGOW: In a remarkable display of speed and resilience, Faiqa Riaz represented Pakistan in the women's 100-metre heat at the Commonwealth Games held at Scotstoun Stadium on Monday. Despite her impressive performance, Riaz fell just short of qualifying for the semi-finals, finishing with a time of 11.64 seconds, a mere twelve one-hundredths of a second away from advancing.

The heartbreak of missing the semi-finals was palpable for Riaz, as she had spent the past two years preparing for this moment. The narrow margin that separated her from the next round is often referred to as scoreboard cruelty in the world of sprinting, and it was a reality she faced head-on after crossing the finish line.

However, the day was not without its triumphs. Riaz's time of 11.64 seconds not only marked a personal best but also established her as the fastest woman in Pakistan's history, breaking a long-standing national record of 11.81 seconds set by Naseem Hameed during the 2010 South Asian Games. This achievement is particularly significant, as it ended a 16-year wait for a new benchmark in Pakistani women's sprinting.

Reflecting on her performance, Riaz expressed a mix of emotions. "I am really glad to achieve the goal that I set up for myself despite many obstacles," she stated in an interview following the race. Initially, she believed she had finished in 11.65 seconds, which would have also been a record. The official result, however, revealed an even faster time, solidifying her place in the history books.

In her heat, Riaz finished third, with Australia’s Torrie Lewis taking the lead at 11.15 seconds, followed by Antigua’s Geolyna Dowdye at 11.28 seconds. The final qualifying position was claimed by Barbados’ Kishawna Niles, who clocked in at 11.52 seconds. Riaz's performance, while not enough to advance, showcased her potential and determination on an international stage.

After the race, Riaz acknowledged the initial disappointment of missing out on the semi-finals but quickly shifted her focus to the positives. "I felt a little bit sad on missing out but then I said to myself, why should I focus on the negative?" she reflected, demonstrating a mature perspective that many athletes strive to achieve.

Riaz's journey to this point has not been without its challenges. She previously competed at the 2024 Olympics, where she faced difficulties that impacted her performance. Learning from that experience, she approached the Commonwealth Games with a renewed mindset, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a positive attitude. Her coach, Fayyaz Ahmed, played a crucial role in this mental preparation, encouraging her to believe in her abilities.

While Riaz did not secure a medal at the Commonwealth Games, her record-breaking performance is a significant milestone for Pakistani athletics. It highlights the potential for growth and development in a sport that has historically faced challenges in the country. Riaz trains rigorously at Punjab Stadium in Lahore, dedicating hours each day to her craft, and her success serves as an inspiration for future generations of athletes.

As she reflects on her achievements, Riaz's gratitude shines through. She acknowledges the support from her coaches and the Pakistan Olympic Association, emphasizing the collective effort behind her success. Despite the disappointment of not advancing, Faiqa Riaz has firmly established herself as a trailblazer in Pakistani sprinting, and her journey is far from over.
