Scuderia Ferrari is gearing up for a significant weekend at the Italian Grand Prix in Monza, where they will not only showcase a special livery dedicated to the legendary Michael Schumacher but also introduce their second upgraded power unit under the Additional Development and Upgrade Opportunities (ADUO) program. This strategic move comes as Ferrari seeks to enhance its competitiveness in the Formula 1 2026 season.
According to figures released by the FIA, Ferrari has been granted two ADUO upgrades after it was determined that their power unit was over 4% less powerful compared to the leading unit from Red Bull Ford. Alongside Audi and Honda, Ferrari is permitted two upgrades, while Mercedes is limited to just one. The team previously implemented their first upgrade during the Austrian Grand Prix and is now set to roll out the second and final upgrade of the season at Monza, a track where power is a critical factor.
Both Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc have acknowledged the power deficit that Ferrari has faced this season. However, they have expressed satisfaction with the improvements made to the chassis, which have helped the team secure second place in the Constructors' Championship. By deploying this upgrade at Monza, Ferrari is taking a calculated risk, but they appear confident in the potential benefits it may yield.
With several races still remaining in the F1 2026 season, Ferrari's decision to implement the upgrade now could pave the way for a more focused development strategy for the 2027 season. Team principal Frederic Vasseur emphasized the importance of achieving marginal gains and views the upcoming race at Monza as an opportunity to secure those improvements.
Vasseur shared his thoughts on the significance of the Italian GP, stating, "Monza is always a very special weekend for Ferrari. Racing in front of our tifosi gives the whole team incredible energy, and this year there will be an additional emotional dimension as we celebrate Michael Schumacher and the legacy he has left in our company." He further noted that Schumacher's relentless pursuit of excellence and teamwork continue to inspire the team today.
On the performance front, Vasseur confirmed that the updated power unit is a step in the right direction for Ferrari. He acknowledged the challenges posed by the demanding Monza circuit, where the competition is incredibly tight. "Our priority will be to execute every aspect of the weekend as well as possible, from Friday onwards. We want to draw extra motivation from the passion of our home crowd and give our tifosi a strong weekend," he concluded.
