Former Clemson starting quarterback waived by Los Angeles Chargers

DJ Uiagalelei’s latest attempt to secure a spot on an NFL roster has ended with another trip to waivers.

The Los Angeles Chargers released the former Clemson quarterback Sunday, choosing veteran Trey Lance as Justin Herbert’s backup heading into the 2026 season.

Uiagalelei could still remain with the organization. Los Angeles reportedly has interest in bringing him back to the practice squad if no other team claims him.

The former Tiger spent the summer trying to make his case for the No. 2 job and finished the preseason completing 24 of 42 passes for 341 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions.

Uiagalelei has been with the Chargers since signing as an undrafted free agent following the 2025 NFL Draft. He also missed out on the initial 53-man roster last year before returning to the practice squad, where he spent his rookie season.

Before beginning his professional career, Uiagalelei was Clemson’s starting quarterback for most of the 2021 and 2022 seasons. He went 22-6 as a starter and threw for 5,681 yards and 36 touchdowns during his three years with the Tigers.

After Cade Klubnik took over during the 2022 ACC Championship Game, Uiagalelei transferred to Oregon State and later finished his college career at Florida State.

His next step now depends on whether another NFL team puts in a waiver claim or the Chargers get the chance to bring him back.
