Ravindra Jadeja has long been a cornerstone of India’s Test cricket lineup, contributing significantly as an all-rounder for over a decade. However, former Indian wicketkeeper-batter Deep Dasgupta believes it may be time for the team to begin considering alternatives to the seasoned veteran in the longest format of the game.
During India’s recent two-Test series against Sri Lanka, Jadeja, who is now 37, managed to take eight wickets across four innings. Despite this achievement, Dasgupta expressed concerns about the overall effectiveness of the Indian spin attack, particularly in conditions where spinners were expected to dominate. He pointed to the second Test in Colombo, where, despite Sri Lanka being forced to follow on, they mounted a strong comeback, aided by a century from Sonal Dinusha, ultimately leading to a draw.
“Jadeja has been a great servant, but it’s done now,” Dasgupta stated during a discussion on his YouTube channel. He noted that while Jadeja secured three wickets in Sri Lanka's second innings, the Indian spinners, apart from Manav, lacked the expected potency. “On such pitches, Jadeja has always been very destructive and lethal. I thought he would be crucial on the fifth day. However, he was not as accurate as he has been in the past,” he added, emphasizing the need for a more dynamic spin attack.
Dasgupta also highlighted a troubling trend regarding India’s bowling discipline during the series, noting that several spinners struggled with no-balls. Saransh Jain, making his Test debut, bowled four no-balls, while Jadeja also overstepped once. Dasgupta insists that these issues must be rectified in practice rather than allowing them to manifest during matches. “If you are not careful in the nets, it will happen. This issue is not new with Jadeja; it has only gotten worse,” he remarked.
Despite the concerns raised, India managed to secure a 1-0 victory in the two-match series, winning the first Test in Galle by 165 runs before the second Test concluded in a draw. Looking ahead, India’s next Test engagements will see them touring New Zealand in November, followed by a highly anticipated five-match Test series against Australia, set to begin in January 2027. As the team prepares for these upcoming challenges, the discussions surrounding Jadeja's future role may become increasingly relevant.
