Former TCU safety Jacob Fields charged with aggravated assault on teammate

Former TCU safety Jacob Fields turned himself in to authorities and was charged after allegedly striking former teammate Dozie Ezukanma earlier this month.

According to Tarrant County court records, Fields was booked Sunday, Aug. 30, on a charge of aggravated assault causing serious bodily injury. No bond amount for Fields was posted at the time this story was published.

The former Horned Frogs safety was dismissed from the program on Tuesday, Aug. 18 for an unspecified violation of team rules.

"Due to a violation of team rules, Jacob Fields has been removed from our roster and will not be a member of our team football team moving forward," a TCU spokesman told ESPN in a statement on Aug. 18.

The Fort Worth Star-Telegram initially reported Fields' altercation, reporting it occurred with a teammate on offense. It was noted in the TCU crime and fire log as having occurred 1:30 p.m. local time Thursday, Aug. 13. It was then not reported until 2:29 p.m. the following day, four days before TCU announced his dismissal from the team.

TCU would go on to revoke credentials from a Fort Worth Star-Telegram reporter for reporting on the situation just a few days before the Horned Frogs' Week 0 opener in Dublin against North Carolina.

"It was something that was certainly out of character for the team and the young man that was involved," TCU coach Sonny Dykes said earlier this week in Dublin when asked about the matter. "Look, you got 110 football players. I mean, things happen sometimes. You’ve got to find ways to move through them, and, man, these young kids are resilient.

"It’s like anything else, when something bad happens, it becomes a teaching moment. And so we were able to teach our players, and I think the guys are better off from having gone through it."

Fields, a three-star transfer from Louisiana Tech, was projected to be a starter for the Horned Frogs after earning Conference USA Defensive Player of the Year in 2025. He finished with 91 total tackles, five broken-up passes and three interceptions, two of which were returned for a score, last season at Louisiana Tech.

TCU dropped its season opener, 15-10, on Saturday, Aug. 29, in Ireland to North Carolina in the Aer Lingus College Football Classic.
