FSU's record in season openers during the Mike Norvell era

Florida State fans are hoping 2026 will be a season to remember, in a positive way, as the Seminoles look to rebound from a despair-inducing duo of forgettable seasons.

In the Mike Norvell era, it's not a clear-cut answer as to whether or not this team is viable on opening day. Below is the team's record during Norvell's tenure in their season openers.

Every Florida State season opener during the Norvell era
  • 2020: L, 16-13 to Georgia Tech
  • 2021: L, 41-38 (OT) to Notre Dame
  • 2022: W, 47-7 over Duquesne (FCS)
  • 2023: W, 45-24 over No. 5 LSU
  • 2024: L, 24-21 to Georgia Tech
  • 2025: W, 31-17 over No. 8 Alabama

Norvell can do great against the SEC, it seems. Not included is FSU's stunning victory over LSU in 2022 in New Orleans (but that wasn't a season opener). Against ACC and ACC-adjacent teams, not so much. Conference USA is another story.

In their lifetime, FSU is 21-11-1 against C-USA. They are also 1-0 against New Mexico State, with their most recent game coming in 1964. The Seminoles dominated the Aggies, 36-0.

FSU is 57-22 in season openers in their history, and they will look to make it 58-22 when their game kicks off at 7 p.m. ET in Doak Campbell Stadium. Fans can catch the action on the CW Network.
