Another one of the Georgia Bulldogs' top rivals has named their starting quarterback. The Florida Gators have named quarterback Aaron Philo as their starter for their season opener against Florida Atlantic. Philo, a Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets transfer, has limited experience.
Philo is the all-time leading passer in Georgia high school football history. The Georgia Tech transfer has familiarity with Florida's new offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner from their time together in Atlanta.
Philo played high school football for Prince Avenue Christian, which is in the University of Georgia's backyard. The 6-foot-1, 210-pound quarterback beat out Tramel Jones Jr. for the starting role.
Philo completed 21 of 28 passes for 373 yards, one touchdown and one interception with Georgia Tech in 2025. Phile added four rushes for 19 yards.
The sophomore quarterback said earlier this offseason that he hates Georgia "a lot" despite growing up close to the program. That makes sense because Philo has gone to two of Georgia's biggest rivals in Georgia Tech and Florida.
Philo could have the opportunity to start against Georgia on Oct. 31 in Atlanta. The Bulldogs will be closely watching to see how Philo and Florida's season is going. For now, Philo is glad to win the start role.
"I'm honored, and I don't take it lightly at all," Philo said after being named the starter. "I don't take this position for granted at all. I'm very blessed, very honored. It's something that I've worked my whole life to get to, and so I definitely don't take it lightly. And I'm going to do everything in my power to bring Florida back."
