NEWBURGH, Ind. — Graig Hoffman, recognized as one of the premier players in Castle High School football history, will receive a significant honor this Friday. He is scheduled to be inducted into the Indiana Football Hall of Fame during halftime of the Knights' matchup against Bosse on September 4.
Hoffman, a 1993 graduate, made a name for himself as a formidable two-way lineman under the guidance of Hall of Fame coach John Lidy. His high school career laid the groundwork for a successful collegiate journey at the University of Louisville, where he continued to excel on the field.
This induction marks a notable occasion for Castle High School, as Hoffman becomes the fifth individual associated with the school to be honored in the Hall of Fame, joining the ranks of Lidy, Joe Huff, Deon Chester, and Scott Bonnell. The Knights' game is set to kick off at 7 p.m. CT, although the timing may be adjusted due to the anticipated high temperatures.
During his time at Castle, Hoffman was a dominant force on the field, earning All-State honorable mention and a selection to the All-Star Game in his senior year. His final season was marred by a knee injury that required midseason surgery, but he demonstrated resilience by returning to play in the last three games of the season after initially being sidelined.
Hoffman's collegiate career at Louisville was equally impressive. He started 36 consecutive games as the center on the offensive line, showcasing his durability and skill. Over his four years, he earned multiple accolades, including All-Conference honors, Academic All-Conference recognition, and the title of University of Louisville Scholar Athlete of the Year for the 1996/97 academic year. His contributions helped the Cardinals secure a victory over Michigan State in the Liberty Bowl, finishing the season ranked 12th in the final Associated Press poll.
In addition to his athletic achievements, Hoffman has built a successful career off the field. He currently serves as the Executive Director at North Wilkesboro Speedway and holds the position of Senior Director of Partnerships at Bristol Motor Speedway, further demonstrating his leadership and commitment to the sports community.
Hoffman will be inducted alongside two other notable figures in the Class of 2026: Randy Mattingly from Evansville Rex Mundi and David Carter from Vincennes Lincoln. Mattingly was an All-Conference quarterback at the University of Evansville and was selected in the fourth round of the 1973 NFL Draft by the Cleveland Browns. He spent that season on various practice squads before transitioning to the Canadian Football League.
David Carter, a four-year starter on the offensive line at Western Kentucky University, contributed to the Hilltoppers' success as they finished as NCAA Division II National Runners-Up twice during his tenure. He was drafted in the sixth round of the 1977 NFL Draft by the Houston Oilers, where he enjoyed a nine-season career before his untimely passing in July 2021.
