The Great Falls High football program is gearing up for an exciting event as it prepares to host its second annual 'Night of Champions 2.0.' This occasion is designed to honor former championship teams, inviting back all past players and coaches from the state football championship Bison teams.
The festivities will kick off with a meet-and-greet at Snits Bar, located at 619 Central Avenue in downtown Great Falls, on Thursday, August 27, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. The following day, a luncheon will take place in the Old Gym at Great Falls High at 11:30 a.m., leading up to the main event.
During the pre-game ceremonies on Friday, August 28, players and coaches from the historic championship teams will be recognized on the field. This recognition will occur prior to the 7 p.m. kickoff of the Bison's season opener against Kalispell Flathead. This match will also mark the debut of the stadium's new scoreboard, adding to the excitement of the evening.
Great Falls High has a storied football history, boasting an impressive 16 state football championships since its inception in 1905, as per Montana High School Association (MHSA) records. The Bison have achieved back-to-back state titles on three occasions: in 1905-06, 1948-49, and 1973-74. The last time the team claimed a championship was in 1988, under the guidance of head coach Dale Pohle, when they triumphed over Billings West with a close score of 9-6 at Memorial Stadium. Tim Klinger was instrumental in that victory, scoring all points through three field goals, including a game-winning 24-yarder with just 11 seconds left on the clock.
This year's 'Night of Champions 2.0' follows the inaugural event held during the 2024 season, which successfully brought together former players and coaches to celebrate the legacy of Bison football. The event not only serves as a reunion for alumni but also aims to foster community spirit and support for the current team as they embark on a new season.
Those interested in attending are encouraged to RSVP via the form available on the Great Falls High football Facebook page. This event is a perfect opportunity for fans, alumni, and community members to come together and celebrate the rich history of the Bison football program.
