After two decades away from the football field, the Greater Beckley Christian Crusaders made a triumphant return last Friday night, securing a 46-12 victory over Van in Boone County. This match not only marked their first game in 20 years but also their first win, a significant milestone for the program and the community.
Head coach Brian Harmon expressed immense pride in his team's achievement, stating, "To be able to go down and get our first win was a very proud feeling. I’m just really proud for the boys and their hard work that they put into it to get to this point, to get through Week 1." The victory comes after months of preparation and anticipation, highlighting the dedication of the players and coaching staff.
Junior receiver Javonte Spencer was a standout performer, showcasing his skills by scoring five touchdowns—two rushing and three receiving. He finished the night with impressive stats, totaling 119 yards on the ground and 125 yards through the air. Spencer's performance was pivotal, as he scored every time he touched the ball, except for one touchdown that was called back. He credited his success to the offensive line and quarterback J.P. Southern, saying, "I’m very happy with my line for blocking and giving me holes, and my quarterback for throwing the ball on the money."
Southern also had a notable game, completing 5 of 11 passes for 201 yards and three touchdowns to Spencer, while also rushing for 103 yards and a touchdown on four carries. Coach Harmon praised Southern's performance, noting, "We have a few things we need to work on, but overall his performance, for a first game, it was surprising to a degree." His ability to scramble and make plays under pressure was crucial in leading the Crusaders to victory.
Defensively, the Crusaders were equally impressive, forcing six turnovers, including an interception by Jackson Stacy and five fumbles. Harmon acknowledged the resilience of Van, who was playing their first game since 2023 after a season cancellation due to a lack of players. He remarked on the importance of their defensive efforts, stating, "That really helped us out in the game and just to stay in it because Van kept coming at us up the middle."
In addition to their offensive and defensive successes, Koltin Murphy contributed with solid punting, averaging 46.5 yards on two kicks. As the Crusaders celebrate this historic win, they are already looking ahead to their next challenge.
The excitement continues to build as the Crusaders prepare for their first home game against Expression Prep Academy (2-0) this Friday at Mount Hope’s Municipal-Lonnie Warwick Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m., and Spencer expressed enthusiasm about the upcoming game, saying, "It’s our first game at our home field. I’m just very excited." Coach Harmon echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the significance of bringing football back to the Greater Beckley community and the thrill of experiencing Friday Night Lights for the first time for many players.
