BOWLING GREEN, KY. — The Greenville Drive experienced a heartbreaking defeat on Thursday night against the Bowling Green Hot Rods, a loss that significantly jeopardizes their playoff aspirations as the season winds down.
In a thrilling finish, the Drive found themselves trailing by two runs in the top of the ninth inning. With their playoff hopes hanging by a thread, Nazzan Zanetello delivered a stunning two-out home run to left-center field, leveling the score at 6-6 and igniting hopes of a comeback. However, the excitement was short-lived as Tony Santa Maria, the leadoff hitter for the Hot Rods in the bottom of the ninth, answered back with his second home run of the night, securing a 7-6 walk-off victory for Bowling Green.
This loss proved particularly damaging for Greenville, as they now sit 2 1/2 games behind the Winston-Salem Dash, who triumphed over the Rome Emperors on the same night. With only three games left in the regular season, the Drive's path to the postseason has become increasingly steep.
The game began with the Drive striking first, as Ronny Hernandez hit his 14th home run of the season with two outs in the first inning. However, the Hot Rods quickly responded, with Santa Maria doubling, stealing third base, and scoring on a single from Nathan Flewelling, tying the game at one run apiece.
Bowling Green took the lead in the third inning when Santa Maria hit his second double of the game. He later scored on a groundout by Narciso Polanco, followed by Ryan McCoy doubling home Flewelling, giving the Hot Rods a 3-1 advantage.
Despite the deficit, the Drive fought back in the sixth inning, thanks to Givian Sirvania. After Stanley Tucker opened the inning with a double and stole third, Sirvania hit a two-run homer to left-center, tying the game at 3-3.
Greenville then took the lead in the seventh inning. Antonio Anderson walked, and Skylar King followed with a two-out RBI double to center, scoring Anderson and putting the Drive ahead 4-3. However, Santa Maria was not done yet. He hit his first home run of the night in the bottom of the seventh, once again tying the game at four runs each.
In the eighth inning, Bowling Green seemed to seize control. After Ryan Cermak walked and Polanco reached on a bunt single, McCoy's ground ball was misplayed, allowing both runners to score and giving the Hot Rods a 6-4 lead heading into the ninth.
With their backs against the wall, the Drive refused to give in. Hernandez led off the ninth with a single, but after two outs, Zanetello's two-strike homer brought the Drive back to life, tying the game at 6-6.
However, the bottom of the ninth saw Santa Maria deliver the final blow, hitting a walk-off home run off Matt McShane, sealing the fate of the Drive. Dylan Brown started the game for Greenville, allowing three runs on eight hits over 5 1/3 innings while striking out eight, but ultimately, it was McShane who took the loss.
As the Drive head into their final three games of the regular season, they must not only win out but also rely on the Dash to falter in their upcoming matches to keep their playoff hopes alive.
