India is gearing up to kick off a two-match Test series against Sri Lanka on August 15 in Galle, with anticipation building around the inclusion of uncapped pacer Gurnoor Brar. Former Sri Lankan all-rounder Farveez Maharoof has expressed confidence in Brar's potential to serve as an X-factor for the Indian squad during this crucial series.
Brar, who made his international debut earlier this year in an ODI against Afghanistan, has already made a mark with his performance, claiming 11 wickets in six innings at an average of 32.81. His first-class cricket statistics are equally impressive, featuring 62 wickets in 19 matches at an average of 25.24. This includes notable achievements such as four four-wicket hauls, two five-wicket hauls, and a remarkable 10-wicket match haul.
During a recent press interaction organized by Sony Sports Network, Maharoof singled out Brar as a potential game-changer for India. He emphasized Brar's unique attributes, stating, "I like Gurnoor Brar. I think he can be an X-factor. He has the bounce, pace, the fighting spirit, and he can be nasty." This endorsement comes on the heels of Brar's impressive display in a warm-up match against Sri Lanka XI, where he took three wickets and challenged several seasoned batters.
Maharoof noted, "If you watched the warm-up match, some of the deliveries he bowled against the batters who have already played Tests, he made them quite uneasy. A couple of players also got some body blows." Despite acknowledging that Brar's lack of Test experience could be seen as a risk, Maharoof believes that the young pacer's ability to generate both pace and bounce could make him a significant asset in short spells.
"If I am the think tank of India, I will be tempted to try Brar. I know he has not played red-ball cricket and has just played white-ball cricket for India, but he brings that X-factor, those short spells where you just want to break the rhythm of the batter. He can be a lethal weapon," Maharoof added, highlighting the potential impact Brar could have in the series.
In addition to Brar, Maharoof also praised India’s captain Shubman Gill, who is set to lead the team in the upcoming Tests. He remarked on Gill's exceptional form, noting, "Shubman Gill is a quality player. He is one of the best going around; his Test average this year is 70-odd. Numbers speak for themselves. The way he batted in the second innings of that warm-up match was superb. He is one of the best going around, not only in Tests, but also in all formats."
As the Indian team prepares for the challenges ahead, the squad for the Sri Lanka Tests includes notable players such as KL Rahul (Vice-Captain), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rishabh Pant (WK), Sarfaraz Khan, Dhruv Jurel (WK), Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, Manav Suthar, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Gurnoor Brar, Devdutt Padikkal, Saransh Jain, and Auqib Nabi.
