Helena Capital holds off C.M. Russell football in season-opener

Carson Toivonen accounted for all three scores as the Helena Capital football team held off C.M. Russell High 21-14 in a season-opening nonconference game.

Kasey Kegel threw for a pair of touchdowns as the Rustlers kept things close, hitting Blake Katz for an 11-yard score with nine seconds left in the first half and Devyn Smith from 25 yards out with just under four minutes to play, according to 406 MT Sports.

CMR drove deep into Bruins’ territory late before the Capital defense held on a fourth down to secure the victory, 406 reporter Chris Peterson posted on X.

The Rustlers made their home debut at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 4, against Missoula Sentinel at Memorial Stadium to close out the nonconference schedule.
