High School Football Teams Prioritize Heat Safety Amid Rising Temperatures

BERTIE COUNTY, N.C. — With the summer heat persisting, high school football teams in Bertie County are gearing up for games scheduled for this week, despite the challenging weather conditions. The heat has already led to the cancellation of several middle school games in the region, highlighting the serious implications of playing in extreme temperatures.

In response to the rising heat index, athletic directors and trainers are taking proactive steps to ensure the safety of student-athletes. Adjustments to practice schedules and the implementation of safety measures are crucial as teams prepare to take the field. The focus is not only on performance but also on the well-being of the players, who are at risk of heat-related illnesses.

Marlee Stalls, an athletic trainer at Bertie High School, emphasized the physiological challenges athletes face in high temperatures. "One of the things you see is their blood pressure drop, but their heart rate won’t increase, so our bodies are having to work even harder to keep us going when that happens," Stalls explained. She referenced a recent incident at Northwest Guilford Middle School, where a young athlete suffered a cardiac arrest due to heat exposure, underscoring the potential dangers of playing in such conditions.

The North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) has established comprehensive guidelines aimed at protecting student-athletes from the risks associated with high temperatures. These protocols include adjusting practice times based on heat index values and utilizing the wet bulb globe temperature (WBGT) metric, which takes into account temperature, humidity, wind speed, and solar radiation to assess heat stress more accurately.

As the football season progresses, the emphasis on heat safety remains critical. Coaches and staff are tasked with monitoring conditions closely and making necessary adjustments to ensure that athletes can compete safely. This commitment to safety is vital not only for the immediate health of the players but also for fostering a culture of responsibility and care within the sport.

With the excitement of high school football games returning, the focus on heat safety serves as a reminder of the responsibilities involved in youth sports. By prioritizing the health and safety of student-athletes, schools and athletic programs can help mitigate the risks associated with extreme weather conditions, allowing players to enjoy the game while minimizing potential hazards.
