ROCKTON, Ill. — The Hononegah Indians are looking to bounce back from a challenging previous season that was marred by injuries. Despite the setbacks, the team still managed to reach the playoffs, showcasing their resilience. This year, with a healthier roster, the Indians are optimistic about their chances in the NIC-10 championship race.
Head coach Brian Zimmerman is eager to put last season behind him, emphasizing the importance of health for the team’s success. “It’s something that we’re going to put in the rearview mirror, and so far, so good, we’re healthy this season,” he stated. This renewed vigor is crucial as the team prepares for the upcoming challenges in the NIC-10.
One of the key players returning to the field is Brody Sendele, a running back and linebacker who missed last season due to a shoulder injury. Sendele found success in wrestling, winning a state championship, but he expressed his eagerness to return to football. “I really missed football. I enjoy football a lot, hanging out with my buddies. Wrestling is really a one-person sport, all about yourself. I love football,” he said, highlighting his passion for the game.
Zimmerman praised Sendele’s commitment and work ethic, noting, “He gets after it. Anytime we can get wrestlers in the football program, I love it.” The addition of Sendele, along with other key players, could significantly bolster the team’s performance this season.
In addition to Sendele, the Indians have welcomed two notable transfers from Boylan: lineman Caleb Collins and quarterback Dominic Cacciatore. Zimmerman has noted that Cacciatore has made a seamless transition to the team, adapting well to the offensive scheme. “He’s done a really nice job of adapting to our offense, what we like to run. He’s got a good rapport with his teammates,” he said.
Hononegah offensive lineman Richard Gambini has also recognized Cacciatore’s dedication to mastering the playbook. “His dad (John) was obviously the Boylan head coach. He had him have all the flashcards out for our plays studying them all, and he knew them all before we even got to training camp. I think he looks great,” Gambini remarked, indicating Cacciatore's preparedness for the season.
As Cacciatore steps into the quarterback role, he will have the advantage of throwing to one of the NIC-10’s most reliable receivers, 6-foot-4 Caleb Parker-Lones. Last season, Parker-Lones demonstrated his ability to make crucial plays, earning praise from Zimmerman for his knack for securing first downs. “Any time we need a first down, it seemed like the ball went to him,” Zimmerman noted.
In addition to Parker-Lones, the receiving corps includes Ryan Fritsch, a standout sprinter from the track team, who will play as a slot receiver, along with Giovanni Zepeda and tight end Logan Wilson, both of whom have proven themselves as effective pass catchers. The running back position will see Sendele alongside Emerson Tuula, adding depth to the backfield.
On the defensive side, the Indians return several key players, including starting center Tim Caver, right tackle Richard Gambini, and right guard Wyatt Kinney. Defensive stalwarts such as Logan Wilson, Tristen Ginn, and Chase Timmerman will play pivotal roles, with Sendele and Tuula anchoring the linebacker position. Fritsch and Jacob Duval will round out a strong secondary.
Sendele expressed confidence in the defense, stating, “I think the defense is pretty strong right now from what I’ve seen in practice. I think we’re going to be a pretty good defense.” With the combination of returning talent and new additions, Hononegah is set to make a significant impact in the NIC-10 this season.
