Houston Mayor John Whitmire has officially thrown his support behind the city's bid to secure the NHL's 33rd franchise, a move that could significantly enhance the local sports landscape. This initiative comes as the NHL, which has remained a 32-team league since the 2021-22 season, evaluates potential expansion options in Texas, specifically between Houston and Austin.
The NHL's decision to consider expansion was announced in June, with Commissioner Gary Bettman and The Friedkin Group currently engaged in a six-month assessment to determine which of the two Texas cities will be awarded the new franchise. The last expansion team, the Seattle Kraken, was approved during a Board of Governors meeting in December 2018, marking a notable moment in the league's growth.
In a recent interview, Mayor Whitmire expressed confidence in Houston's ability to host an NHL team, stating, "We’re ready. In fact, we’re talking to multiple parties that are interested ... So when we get a proposal, if the city can do something to a system, we’ll be there. We’ll definitely be a better location than Austin." His remarks highlight the city's proactive approach to the NHL expansion discussions.
Whitmire also pointed out Houston's strong track record of supporting its sports franchises, asserting that the NHL would not regret choosing Houston over Austin. The Friedkin Family, led by Dan Friedkin, is reportedly committed to investing $3.5 billion in the project, which includes the expansion fee and the construction of a new venue. Houston is already home to a diverse array of professional sports teams across various leagues, including the NFL, MLB, NBA, MLS, and NWSL, with the WNBA set to join in 2027.
