Humphreys County football has canceled its Week 1 game, the Humphreys County School District announced on social media.
The cancellation comes after a Humphreys County football player, JaKamryn Price, was shot and killed on Aug. 21 following the Cowboys' jamboree game. The schools system announced the cancelation on its Facebook page.
Humphreys County was scheduled to host Yazoo City on Aug. 28 to open its season.
"To allow our students, families and the broader community additional time for reflection and healing, the Humphreys County School District has decided not to hold the football game scheduled for tomorrow night against Yazoo City," the statement said. "This decision was not made lightly. We recognize the important role that athletics and other extracurricular activities play in enriching our students' overall educational experience and supporting their personal growth.
"This was not a district game; therefore, the cancellation will not affect our team's eligibility or opportunity to advance to the playoffs. We appreciate the understanding and continued support of our school community."
On Aug. 22, the HCSD posted on social media about Price's death.
"The Humphreys County School District is deeply saddened by the passing of JaKamryn Price, an 11th-grade student at Humphreys County High School," Humphreys County interim superintendent Stanley Ellis said in a statement. "His presence was an important part of the Humphreys County High School family, and he will be deeply missed throughout our school community."
Price, 16, was a junior who played defensive end and tight end for the Cowboys.
Last season, the Cowboys ended 6-5 in MHSAA 3A.
