Huset’s Speedway heads for the finish line

BRANDON, S.D. (KELO) -- Kids are headed back to the classroom, but summer is still going strong at Huset's Speedway in Brandon.

The finish line is quickly approaching at Huset's Speedway.

"We had some weather issues, obviously, early in the year with rain and then the heat, but I think overall the we've had really good momentum here the last part of the season," Huset's Speedway General Manager Doug Johnson said.

With the calendar about to turn to September, a pair of track championships are up for grabs this weekend.

"You want to see the track championships come down to the last weekend and make it exciting for the drivers and the fans. That's what it's all about. That's what these guys work so hard for all year long is to accumulate points and earn that track championship," Johnson said.

"Really, the goal into the year was just be there at the end and to win a championship," sprint car driver Aydin Lloyd said.

Aydin Lloyd currently ranks second in the RaceSaver Sprint Car Series standings, three points out of first place. The third-year driver is still relatively new to the sport, though he did grow up around the track.

"Back in the day, my dad helped a guy named Mark DeBoer in the Late Model Street Stock class and stock cars and late models, and they did a bunch of racing. So, yeah, I've always been around it, but never really as deep in as what I am now," Lloyd said.

Lloyd recently set the Huset's record for fastest lap in RaceSaver history, and will now look to add a track title to his resume.

"That would top it all off and almost a dream come true," Lloyd said.

The final races of the season will be run on Labor Day weekend. The World of Outlaws are back for the final three shows of their record eight performances this spring and summer at Huset's.

"It gives the fans a chance to see the greatest sprint car drivers in the world come and compete here for three straight days. And, you know, not have any travel expense. And that's what it's all about, keeping everybody together. And like I said, it's one big family," Johnson said.

The gates open this Sunday at 5:00 p.m. Hot laps start at 6:30, followed by racing at 7:30. The season ends with the World of Outlaws next Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
